Your baby may, in principle, sleep in the hammock for as long as necessary, but no two children are alike. Should you be uncertain whether you are overusing the hammock, we recommend that you consult a health professional who is qualified to assess your situation.
At Moonboon, we always refer to the recommendations issued by the health authorities. They have not issued any specific recommendations for the use of a baby hammock. Therefore, we suggest that you go with your instinct as a parent.
While baby may certainly sleep in the hammock at night, keep in mind the following: A hammock is not a substitute for a bed. Baby needs to sleep on a firm mattress. If baby is able to turn over, it is important not to let him or her sleep in the hammock without supervision. Baby must have the opportunity to turn the head, and the head must not be pressed against the chest.
Should you have very specific questions about your baby and your use of the hammock, we recommend that you speak to a health professional who is qualified to make assessments of your situation.
When the hammock arrives from Moonboon, you will find the organic kapok mattress tucked into its internal pocket. Being a natural material, the kapok inside the mattress may “settle” and retain the bend it had during shipping.
This may cause the lopsidedness. Fortunately, there is an easy fix: Take the mattress out of the hammock and manually redistribute and even out the kapok filling. Work especially on the filling in the side that baby tended to roll toward. Then place the mattress back into the hammock's pocket.
It is important that you tie the hammock’s 4 ties securely to help it hang straight. This applies to the two ties at the sides to be fastened to the cross bar and the two ties at the top of the hammock.
The Moonboon hammock may be washed by hand at just over 40 degrees C / 100 degrees F. We do not recommend machine washing as the metal ring of the hammock may cause damage to your washing machine.
The internal kapok mattress does not tolerate being laundered, but it benefits from being aired outdoors once a month or so. Kapok is a hypoallergenic and breathable natural fiber that would be degraded if washed. We recommend that you clean minor stains by rubbing a small amount of soap and water on it.
Yes indeed. Ceilings differ in terms of the materials they are made of. Concrete, drywall / gypsum, and wood, as examples, have different characteristics. Each type of ceiling will require a specific type of hook. That is why we do not include a hook with your Moonboon purchase.
We recommend that you check with your local building center or home improvement store and ask for guidance in terms of hanging the hammock securely.
It is generally recommended that you hang any weight from a structural beam in the ceiling.
Baby hammock motor
The hammock motor from Moonboon is compatible with most hammocks on the market, but it is developed especially to be used with the Moonboon hammock and spring.
Our motor will be helpful to you even if you have a hammock of a different brand – for example, from Nature’s Sway or Nonomo. If used with the Nonomo spring and hammock, the Moonboon motor will work only with babies of 6 kg / 13 lbs or above, while the minimum weight of the baby is 4 kg / 8.8 lbs when the motor is used with a Moonboon hammock.
It is important that there be no more than 15 cm / 6 inches of chain between the motor and the ceiling if baby weighs less than 8 kg / 17.6 lbs.
For security reasons, the chain above the motor may not exceed 15 cm / 6 inches when baby weighs less than 8 kg / 17.6 lbs. If the chain above the motor is longer, the motor may begin to swing from side to side.
The motor may hang in a chain that is no longer than 15 cm / 6 inches when baby weighs less than 8 kg / 17.6 lbs. If your ceiling is high, we suggest you suspend the hammock in a tripod stand or from a door frame clamp. As an example, if your ceiling height is 3 m / 10 feet, hanging the hammock from a hook will end up suspending the hammock too high up.
This is not a risk to your child's safety, but it will be more difficult for you to get baby settled in the hammock.
Parents of twins will especially enjoy the benefits of a hammock with a motor. We are currently developing a spring and a hammock designed for twins that will work with our motor. Our motor is not tested for use with springs designed for twins and with other brands of hammocks.
Safety takes highest priority for us here at Moonboon, especially when it comes to the hammock motor. At this time, it has not been possible to manufacture a completely quiet motor without compromising our values related to safety.
We continually develop our products using the latest technology. Therefore, our latest model of motor features a sound dampening shell.
The cradle sold by Leander is an example of a rigid cradle. We have not had the opportunity to test whether the Moonboon hammock motor can be used with a rigid cradle, but several mothers have reported that they have had great success doing just that.
Please note that a rigid cradle usually weighs more than a typical hammock. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that the motor may be used until baby reaches 15 kg / 33 lbs.
Keep in mind that a spring is required if you are using our motor with a rigid cradle.
We designed the timer to run anywhere between 5 minutes and 3 hours. This provides time for the motor to run until baby settles down; it will then gradually slow down until it pauses.
Should you wish to use the motor for longer than 3 hours, we recommend that you ensure baby is comfortable and snug before you start it anew. It is not possible to set the motor to run for longer than 3 continuous hours.
Several experts have participated in the design of the Moonboon products – engineers as well as professionals from the health authorities. Our primary concern has always been safety, and the maximum speed of the motor was set according to the recommendations of the experts.
Bundle: Baby hammock with motor
Your Moonboon bundle deal includes the motor and the hammock. This means that you are ready to start using the hammock right away. You just need to decide how to hang up the hammock and the motor. They can be hung in a tripod stand, in a door frame clamp, or from a hook in the ceiling. Please note that the package deal does not include a ceiling hook.
Please note that the door frame clamp is not included in the package deal – it is available for purchase separately.
The Moonboon tripod stand is designed to be tall enough to hold a hammock and a hammock motor. The tripod stand is 203 cm / 6.6 feet tall, leaving 200 cm / 6.5 feet from the hook to the floor. This allows for plenty of room to ensure 5 cm / 2.5 inches of free space under the hammock when the tripod stand is carrying a hammock as well as a motor.
When standing upright on the floor, the distance between the three legs is110 cm / 3.6 feet. The diameter of the tripod stand is 127 cm / 4.1 feet.
The Moonboon tripod stand is easy to disassemble and take along, say if you are visiting family or vacationing at the cottage. It’s fast and simple to untwist the three legs and pack the pieces for transport (short or long distance).
The hammock is designed to fit snugly around baby and provide comfort, but as baby grows, space gets sparse. We recommend that you purchase a hammock stiffener to give baby a firm support.
The Moonboon hammock stiffener is designed to fit perfectly in the Moonboon hammock, but it may be used with other brands of hammocks so long as they are sized for babies. The Moonboon hammock stiffener is 29 x 90 cm / 11.4 x 35.5 inches.
Door frame clamp
The door frame clamp may be mounted on a door frame no wider than 25 cm /9.8 inches.
Most door frames, unfortunately, are not high enough to accommodate the hammock and the motor. When checking the height of a door frame, be sure that there is 5 cm / 2 inches of space under the hammock when the spring is fully extended.
In general, you need 220 cm / 7.2 feet between the floor and the top of the door frame to accommodate a hammock and a motor. If there is a doorstep, the 220 cm / 7.2 feet go from the top of the door frame to the doorstep.
All springs wear over time, and we encourage you to purchase a new spring if you acquired a used hammock.
Our hammock motor is designed to work with the Moonboon spring, and we recommend that you purchase a Moonboon spring for use with your hammock motor. This will ensure the best experience for baby when it’s time to visit dreamland.
The spring is 30 cm / 11.8 inches with no load, and it will extend to 65 cm / 25.6 inches when fully extended.
Never fear that the spring will break. The Moonboon spring has a built-in safety strap that keeps baby from falling.
